Mexico City debate on dignified death legislation, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): Mexico can no longer keep the debate over dignified death hidden, according to Samara Martínez, promoter of the Ley Trasciende and founder of the Coalición Muerte Digna ¡Ya! She argued that the country should move toward a legal framework that allows patients with terminal illnesses to decide the end of their lives.
Martínez spoke at the forum “The Right to Decide at the End of Life,” held at the Mexico City Congress to analyze the initiative on the matter. She highlighted what she described as a historic opportunity for the capital.
In response, Valeria Cruz, chair of the Health Committee of the city Congress, told the social organizations that the legislative body has already committed to drafting the proposal. She also announced three additional discussion forums.
For the Mexico City government, Nadine Gasman, head of the local Health Secretariat, reiterated the government’s willingness to prepare the public health system to respond to these decisions using bioethics criteria and legal safeguards.
Ruth Francisca López, head of the Institute for Persons with Disabilities, stressed that the debate must guarantee full recognition of legal capacity and the will of persons with disabilities, free of prejudice and supported by support networks.
