Mexico circular economy waste management law, Digi Mart USA News: The Green Party (PVEM) has called for a shift in how Mexico handles garbage, stating that 97.7% of final waste disposal sites in the country fail to comply with environmental regulations. The party argues that this figure confirms the need to change the waste management model and to recover materials that can still re-enter production processes.
The party said the problems reflect persistent deficiencies in collecting, separating, treating and properly disposing of waste. It called for accelerating implementation of the General Law on Circular Economy, which its legislators promoted in the Congress of the Union and which was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) in January of this year.
According to the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), Mexico has 2,250 final disposal sites, but only 52 comply with NOM-083-SEMARNAT-2003, which sets environmental conditions to prevent soil contamination and control biogas emissions. The Green Party noted that the law aims to reduce waste generation, extend product life spans and recover materials for new uses.
The party said the legislation sets responsibilities for productive sectors, establishes coordination mechanisms among different levels of government, and includes measures to facilitate reuse, recycling and the return of materials to production chains. It also provides for the gradual conversion of authorized sanitary landfills toward more efficient management schemes.
The Green Party said the next challenge is putting these provisions into practice through harmonization of state laws, better collection and separation systems, and investment in infrastructure that allows materials to be recovered instead of sent directly to disposal sites. It described the circular economy as an opportunity to move away from a model in which resources are used and discarded without capturing their value, and said enforcing the law will be essential to reducing pollution, optimizing raw material use and building a more responsible and sustainable waste management system.
