Impact on Mexico after Trump’s midterm election setback, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): Following Republican losses in the U.S. midterm elections, immigration raids and tariffs against Mexico are expected to continue, according to a report from El Heraldo de Aguascalientes.

Although Democrats seek to limit the power of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), funding for anti-immigrant raids remains in the U.S.

budget, specialists from the Ibero university warned. The agency has funding guaranteed through September 2029, months after Trump’s term ends in January of that year.

Analyst George I. González said the loss of legislative support could push Trump toward a more aggressive stance.

Academic Jorge Schiavon considered that Democrats will have room in Congress to modify anti-immigrant policies.

Mexico’s Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, said that despite the Democratic victory, there will be no changes in trade matters with the United States. “The powers over tariffs belong to the President, and most of the tariff relationship does not change much,” he acknowledged.

Tariffs of 25 to 50 percent on steel, aluminum, copper and the automotive industry were ordered by the U.S. executive branch.

Aribel Contreras, coordinator of the Global Business degree program at the Ibero, estimated that the electoral result will be reflected little in trade matters. “The use of tariffs as a bargaining chip to negotiate political issues is here to stay,” she said.
