Willy Sagnol endorses David Lisnard for 2027 French presidential election, Digi Mart USA News (France): Former French international Willy Sagnol has announced his support for David Lisnard’s candidacy in the presidential election expected next spring. Sagnol, who earned 58 caps for France and was a runner-up at the 2006 World Cup, joins many other current and former athletes who have publicly taken positions ahead of the vote.
Speaking on the podcast Passage à l’acte, hosted by Sophie Mouysset, the former coach, who was recently removed as head coach of Georgia, expressed concern about the direction of the country. “I cannot resign myself to seeing the country pulled between two extremes,” he said, pointing to the current political, social and economic situation in France.
The former defender, who played for Monaco and Bayern Munich, added that he no longer wanted to be someone who complains every morning that the country is not functioning. He warned that if the country remains caught between extremes, “the country will be divided in an even more brutal way.”
According to the report, Sagnol and Lisnard had already grown closer. Sagnol was seen near the leader of the liberal movement “Nouvelle Energie” this summer and took part in “La Gagne,” an event organized by the party in August.
The report describes this as his first public statement of this kind in the media.
Several sports figures have already taken positions in the election campaign, including Teddy Riner and Victor Wembanyama. Others, such as Léon Marchand, have not spoken publicly or chosen not to.
Meanwhile, the sports world has created a collective called “Sport 2027,” which plans to organize a debate with the main presidential candidates in partnership with RMC, BFM and L’Équipe.
