Hurricane Hugo Guadeloupe 1989 documentary, Digi Mart USA News (Guadeloupe): In the night of September 16 to 17, 1989, Hurricane Hugo struck Guadeloupe. Winds of extreme violence and a raging sea devastated the archipelago, causing one of the most destructive natural disasters in its recent history.
By morning, residents found a landscape of desolation. Faced with the scale of the destruction, rescue services and authorities were overwhelmed.
The disaster revealed the vulnerability of buildings and the limits of construction practices.
While solidarity was organized, reconstruction raised an essential question: how can Guadeloupe be better protected from future cyclones? Hugo, through its destructive force, also became a catalyst for crucial reforms aimed at strengthening the resilience of French territories against natural disasters.
These reforms opened the way to changes in construction practices and prevention measures. Through testimonies from residents and from those who worked on rebuilding and protecting the archipelago, the documentary recounts a tragedy that remains part of the collective memory and examines the lessons drawn to prepare for the future.
The documentary was produced by Martin Boudot Production and Bonne Pioche Télévision, with the participation of the Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée and France Télévisions.
