PIP asthma support, USA News: Individuals living with a common breathing condition may be eligible to claim the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), according to recent figures and guidelines from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Asthma is recognized as a long-term lung condition affecting breathing, characterized by main symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness as outlined by the NHS website. While asthma symptoms can range from mild to severe, fluctuating and often worsening at night or in the early morning, severe forms can be deeply debilitating and life-threatening.
Depending on how the condition affects daily life and mobility, sufferers may qualify for support through PIP. Governed by rules detailed on GOV.UK, PIP assists with extra living costs for individuals who have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability, alongside difficulties performing everyday tasks or getting around. Applicants must anticipate these difficulties to persist for at least 12 months from their onset.
PIP consists of daily living and mobility components. The daily living component is determined by an individual’s ability to complete household tasks like cooking and washing, while the mobility component relies on travel and movement requirements. New claimants must be aged 16 or over and under State Pension age, though existing approved claims can continue past that threshold. For the mobility part, the lower rate stands at £30.30 per week, while the enhanced rate is £80. Meeting the eligibility criteria for the higher rate across both components can total £194.60 per week, paid every four weeks at £778.40.
While Northern Ireland operates parallel rules, Scotland has replaced PIP with the Adult Disability Payment (ADP) featuring similar eligibility criteria. Department for Work and Pensions figures from July 31, 2026, show 7,656 cases where asthma served as the primary disabling condition for individuals granted both the daily living and mobility components at the enhanced rate.
Crucially, PIP awards are not granted based on a medical diagnosis alone. Entitlement depends on how the condition functionally impacts daily living and mobility activities, assessed independently by the DWP using medical advice.
