EPFO coverage, USA News: India’s social security framework has expanded through wider EPFO coverage, digital reforms, and welfare initiatives. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) provides provident fund savings, pension, and insurance benefits to eligible members. An increase in the mandatory coverage wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 is expected to bring over 51 lakh additional employees within its ambit. Digital initiatives aim to simplify registration, withdrawals, and claim settlement. Beyond EPFO, initiatives such as e-Shram, PM-SYM, and the Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana extend support to unorganised workers and vulnerable groups.
Social protection coverage in India increased from 19% in 2015 to 68.4% in 2026, bringing more than one billion people within the framework. EPFO contributing members rose from 3.49 crore in 2014-15 to approximately 7.98 crore as of September 16, 2026, while contributing establishments reached 7.68 lakh. Pension support also expanded, with around 82 lakh pensioners receiving benefits as of September 2026 compared to 51.04 lakh during 2014-15. EPFO settled 6.42 crore claims in the one-year period leading up to October 2026.
Digital and Service Reforms
EPFO has streamlined partial withdrawal rules by consolidating 13 provisions into three categories: Essential Needs, Housing Needs, and Special Circumstances. Eligible members can make up to 10 withdrawals for education and 5 for marriage, and withdraw up to 75% of their PF balance under revised frameworks introduced in October 2025. Furthermore, EPFO increased the auto-settlement limit for eligible advance claims to ₹5 lakh and removed requirements to upload cheque-leaf images or attested bank passbooks for online claims.
Compliance and ease of doing business have been targeted through schemes such as VISHWAS 2026 for dispute settlements and AMNESTY 2026 for trust regularisation. Automatic registration via the MCA portal, self-generation of Universal Account Numbers (UAN) using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology, and a Centralised Pension Payment System (CPPS) have further modernized service delivery.
Wider Social Security Initiatives
The broader social security architecture includes e-Shram, which recorded 31.89 crore registrations by August 2026 as a national database of unorganised workers. Schemes like PM-SYM provide contributory pensions for eligible unorganised workers, while legislative codes unify labour laws regarding provident funds, insurance, maternity benefits, and gratuity for both organised and unorganised sectors.
