John Wick animated prequel with Keanu Reeves, Digi Mart USA News: Keanu Reeves’ importance to pop culture cannot be overstated. This month he has become a recurring presence on both AMC+’s latest big thriller and HBO’s current headline drama.
The DC character he made famous, John Constantine, is also returning to screens, and a sequel to his Constantine is still in development.
Nowadays, however, Reeves is synonymous with one name: John Wick. The action hero has led multiple movies, and the universe he inhabits includes several spinoffs.
Now another one is coming, and it brings Reeves back in an interesting way.
This upcoming animated movie will show the origin story of John Wick himself. According to Variety, Reeves will reprise the role in an upcoming prequel from Lionsgate.
He will not undergo any de-aging, because the film is animated and Reeves will only provide the voice.
The prequel will follow Wick as he takes on “The Impossible Task,” a one-night murder spree he must complete to cancel his obligation to the High Table. The film is an origin story, and the filmmakers have turned to animation because no one else could play John Wick like Keanu Reeves.
The still-untitled prequel was announced last year, with animation veteran Shannon Tindle directing and Ryan and Kaz Firpo, who wrote the script for the MCU’s Eternals, writing the screenplay. No casting had been announced at the time, but Reeves’ involvement now confirms he remains central to the franchise.
A key question is how John Wick’s standout combat and action will translate to animation. Part of the franchise’s appeal lies in its precise, relentless stunt work, which is more impressive in live action.
At the same time, animation could allow the action to move a step further into the stylized, and if handled gracefully, it could open a new frontier for the John Wick universe.
So far, the John Wick spinoffs have not reached the heights of the original films. Keeping Keanu Reeves present in spirit and voice while experimenting with the visuals may be the right approach.
It is a risky strategy, but it could pay off. If not, John Wick 5 is still on the way.
