Sony MDR-3R retro headphones Mexico launch, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico): Retro style remains a trend, and that extends to technology. While cassette tapes are not coming back, Sony has officially announced the global launch of the MDR-3R, a modern and adapted reinterpretation of its famous MDR-3 headphones.

The original headphones debuted in 1979 alongside the first Walkman and marked a cultural shift.

Many people who listened to portable music before the MP3 era will remember these headphones, which came with Walkman devices when they were purchased. The new model keeps the timeless essence of its predecessor through an extremely lightweight stainless steel and aluminum headband design, built under the concept H-AIR, meaning “as light as air.”

The headphones retain an open-back design with 23 mm drivers, offering a natural and balanced sound field with clear highs and bass optimized for current streaming platforms. One of the most recognizable features of the original was its colorful ear pads.

The new version includes interchangeable pads in blue and orange, along with packaging that features a vintage aesthetic.

To suit modern smartphones, tablets and laptops, Sony eliminated the need for batteries, charging or Bluetooth pairing. The MDR-3R connects directly through a free USB-C cable.

The headphones include a built-in microphone for calls and a redesigned physical remote for pausing, skipping tracks and adjusting volume.

The Sony MDR-3R headphones are now available for official preorder through Sony Mexico’s online store from November 5 to 17, 2026, with free shipping and a 10% discount. Deliveries will begin on November 18.

The official launch price in Mexico is 999 pesos, compared with a regular list price of 1,349 pesos.

Sony has also confirmed a limited special edition inspired by the Stranger Things series and the 1980s aesthetic, featuring red and black ear pads, with an international price of $79.99 U.S. dollars.

However, there is currently no announcement of this product in Mexico.
