Cuernavaca Morena councilman Gabriel Rivas Ríos killing justice demand, Digi Mart USA News (Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico): Morena councilmembers in the Cuernavaca city council, civic and nongovernmental organizations, union members and family members demanded justice for councilman and activist Gabriel Rivas Ríos, who was killed on Wednesday in the Ejidos de Acapantzingo area of the Morelos state capital.
That morning, his fellow council members condemned the crime and asked prosecutors for a thorough investigation to establish the motive. Councilman Alan Moreno Domínguez of Morena said, “Gabriel was a man committed to social causes and to defending the rights of citizens.
His departure represents a painful loss for those of us who shared with him the work and the responsibility of serving the people of Cuernavaca.”
Cuernavaca Mayor José Luis Urióstegui Salgado offered institutional support by providing security camera footage from the area to help locate and detain those responsible. Speaking to reporters, a local official urged that people avoid speculation and that the competent authority investigate thoroughly and inform society of the motive and those responsible.
Later, members of the civic association “Gustavo Salgado,” of which Rivas Ríos was president, held a rally in the Plaza de Armas of Cuernavaca. They asked the federal government to intervene so that the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic would take over the case, saying state authorities appeared overwhelmed and had not delivered results in many other cases.
Representatives of nongovernmental organizations described the case as a political crime and called for investigation of all cases in which the councilman had denounced irregularities, including real estate developments in protected natural areas of Cuernavaca and the proliferation of bars. Participants later placed an offering at the memorial to victims of violence at the entrance of the Palacio de Gobierno and went to the city hall to leave flowers and candles at his workplace.
