Claudia Sheinbaum Latino voter shift to Democrats and ICE raids: Claudia Sheinbaum: Mexico's president says immigration raids and racism against Latinos likely influenced their shift toward Democrats in the November midterm elections, citing a UnidosUS poll showing 67% of Latino voters backed Democrats.

Claudia Sheinbaum Latino voter shift to Democrats and ICE raids, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico): Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday that immigration raids and racism against Latinos in the United States were probably among the factors that led Latino voters to back the Democratic Party in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Speaking at her morning press conference, Sheinbaum said, “Yes, it is very likely. I don’t have the data, but it is logical to think that something that influenced Latinos who have the right to vote in the United States to choose the Democratic Party now had to do with this racism and, at the same time, with the raids against people because of their skin color and ethnic origin.” She was responding to a question about the possible link between operations by U.S.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the results, which gave Democrats control of both chambers of Congress.

According to data from Mexico’s Foreign Ministry, 17 Mexicans have died in the United States during ICE operations or while in ICE custody since 2025. Sheinbaum said some analyses suggest that Latino voters, including those of Mexican origin, who backed President Donald Trump in 2024 chose Democratic candidates this time.

Her remarks followed a UnidosUS poll finding that 67% of Latino voters supported Democrats in the House of Representatives. The poll also found that 17% of Hispanics who voted for Trump in 2024 backed Democratic candidates this year.

The same poll identified the cost of living and inflation as the main concerns of Latino voters, cited by 58% of respondents, while 27% pointed to immigration policies and ICE actions. On Wednesday, Sheinbaum had highlighted the victories of Democrats of Mexican origin Xavier Becerra, who won the California governorship, and Gina Hinojosa, who won the Texas governorship.

The president said the results reflected a “sentiment of the people” in the United States.
