Mexico foreign minister Roberto Velasco at Ibero-American Summit in Madrid, Digi Mart USA News (Madrid): Mexico’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco, on Thursday defended “cooperation without subordination” as the basis for dialogue and understanding among countries facing common challenges and building a shared future within the Ibero-American community, according to a report by Europa Press.
Speaking at the 30th Ibero-American Summit in Madrid, Velasco advocated a foreign policy “open to dialogue.” “We believe in understanding among sovereign nations, in International Law, in democracy, in self-determination,” he told the plenary session of the summit, promoting “cooperation without subordination.”
He stressed that the peaceful resolution of disputes is one of the principles enshrined in the Mexican Constitution, and one that, he said, “matters more than ever today.”
On security, Velasco called for shared responsibility, mutual respect and trust, along with “respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.” He proposed maintaining dialogue to “achieve concrete results,” while incorporating attention to the causes of violence and respect for human rights in efforts to combat it.
Velasco also described the Ibero-American space as “one of the great realities” and “a community that shares languages, memory and destiny, and that for 35 years has met to turn that heritage into cooperation.” He recalled the community’s inaugural summit in Guadalajara, Mexico, where a commitment was made that, he said, “we renew today in Madrid with the same enthusiasm.”
He concluded by highlighting the Mexican government’s “clear compass” of “caring for people, opening opportunities for young people and facing together what no country can resolve alone.” “Count on Mexico to build the future of Ibero-America together,” he said.
