November 5 protest in Rennes, Digi Mart USA News (Rennes, Ille-et-Vilaine, France): A new day of strikes and demonstrations takes place Thursday, November 5, across France, including in Brittany. In Rennes, the prefecture of Ille-et-Vilaine has approved a route for the marchers.
Called by trade unions, the march will begin at 1 p.m. at Place de Bretagne.
The route declared by the organizers runs from Place de Bretagne along Boulevard de la Tour d’Auvergne, Boulevard du Colombier, Boulevard de Beaumont, Place de la Gare, Avenue Janvier and Boulevard de la Liberté, back to Place de Bretagne, and then repeats the same loop before reaching Place Charles de Gaulle.
In addition to the unions’ own stewards, the prefecture said internal security forces will be present to secure the procession. Officials said they will intervene systematically in the event of violence or damage.
Dispersal of the demonstrators will then take place southward from Place Charles de Gaulle. Authorities said that, given serious violence and damage recorded on October 17, 24 and 31, security forces will also systematically intervene to stop blockade attempts affecting high schools, shopping centers and logistics sites.
All demonstrations are banned in the city’s hyper-center, between Boulevard de la Liberté and Rue de l’Hôtel Dieu, for the entire day of November 5. According to the authorities, organizing an undeclared or banned demonstration is punishable by six months in prison and a fine of 7,500 euros, while taking part in a banned demonstration carries a fixed fine of 135 euros, up to 750 euros.
