November 5 protest in Paris: Republique to Nation route, transport and public services disruptions, Digi Mart USA News (Paris, France): Transport, airports, schools, hospitals, administrations and public services are expected to be heavily affected by the interprofessional strike of November 5, 2026, which is described as a day of strong mobilization in Paris and the Ile-de-France region.
The protest is being organized to defend purchasing power, demand wage increases and denounce the savings planned in the 2027 budget. Unions also call for the protection of public services, employment and better working conditions.
On the rail network, Transilien SNCF Voyageurs says traffic will be disrupted on certain Ile-de-France Mobilites train and RER lines. Normal traffic is expected on RER A and lines K, P and V.
Two trains in three will run on RER B south of Paris Nord, RER E, lines J and L, and between Meaux and La Ferte-Milon on line P. One train in two will run on RER B north of Paris Nord, RER C, lines H, N, R and U, and one train in three on RER D.
The SNCF network will be more affected by the movement. For Thursday, November 5, the company expects slightly disrupted TGV services and more significant disruption on Intercites and TER trains.
The four representative SNCF unions (CGT, Unsa ferroviaire, Sud Rail and CFDT) have called a 24-hour strike to defend wages and employment, demanding wage increases that offset inflation.
During the demonstration, the Paris police prefecture could request the temporary closure of certain metro stations to secure the movement of protesters and travelers. Several dozen stations were closed during previous student mobilizations and yellow vest gatherings.
Several unions at the French civil aviation authority (DGAC) and ground staff have called for mobilization, so airports may face a particularly disrupted day. The DGAC is expected to communicate flight reduction measures to airlines for Paris Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle and Orly airports, with recommended traffic cuts by airport expected to be known Wednesday evening.
On the eve of the movement, the Ministry of National Education estimated the strike rate in public primary education at 17.54%. School canteen services, after-school programs and childcare in schools may run at reduced capacity due to municipal staff participation, so parents are advised to check school and town hall communications from Wednesday evening.
Mobilization is also expected to be significant in secondary schools. The SNES-FSU and FSU-SNUipp have called on staff to strike on Thursday, November 5.
Private-sector education unions have also called on employees to strike that day. High school students and university students plan to join the day of action, and the Union syndicale lyceenne has called for blockades of schools.
The health sector will also be affected, including medical practices and pharmacies. Force Ouvriere has urged pharmacy employees to join the strike, and the CFTC Sante Sociaux federation has called on hospitals, social and medico-social institutions, home care services and pharmacies to stop work.
The CGT Sante et Action sociale and the Social Security intersyndical also called for a strike on November 5 to demand a higher index point and a revision of the 2027 budgets, denouncing the freeze on family benefits, threats to retirement pensions and deteriorating hospital conditions.
In Paris public hospitals (AP-HP), FO and the CGT have called for a strike to obtain withdrawal of budget cuts planned in the state and Social Security budget proposals. All public administrations are also expected to be affected, and the CFDT has filed a strike notice covering the three branches of the civil service: the state, local authorities and hospital institutions.
Other sectors could also be disrupted, including banks, following an intersyndical initiative. Several La Poste unions (CFDT, CGT FAPT, Sud PTT and FO) have called for a strike, and the CGT, the second-largest union, has filed an unlimited strike notice starting November 5.
Shortly before 5 p.m., the Paris police prefecture refused the route submitted by the unions from Bastille to Place de la Concorde via Rue de Rivoli. However, the march will not be relocated as far away as the October 31 demonstration.
The prefecture has authorized a route from Republique to Nation via Boulevard Voltaire. The demonstration is scheduled to take place between 2 p.m.
and 7 p.m., according to the authorities.
