Vatican Clarifies Pope Leo XIV Is Not Traveling to Mexico

Pope Leo XIV Mexico visit: Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni says the pope has not confirmed any trip to Mexico in the coming months, clarifying reports tied to a planned stop at a Guadalupe parish in Uruguay rather than Mexico's Basilica of Guadalupe.

Pope Leo XIV Mexico visit, Digi Mart USA News (Vatican City): Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni has clarified that Pope Leo XIV has not confirmed any visit to Mexico in the coming months. The clarification followed press reports that assumed Robert Francis Prevost would visit the Basilica of Guadalupe during his upcoming trip to South America.

Bruni told reporters that during the apostolic visit to Uruguay, which begins in a few days, Pope Leo XIV will visit the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, known as the Casavalle temple, in Montevideo. He will not, however, visit the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico, the second most visited Marian shrine in the world.

The confusion arose during a press conference presenting the full program of the pastoral visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, scheduled from November 6 to 17. María Monserrat Alvarado, prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication, said the pope would visit the temple dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Bruni later clarified that she was referring to the Casavalle parish.

No date has yet been set for a Mexico visit. Since the early months of his pontificate, Pope Leo XIV has expressed a desire to visit Mexico and the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

Multiple commitments have prevented him from setting a date for a first visit to the country as successor of Saint Peter.

The pope has said he hopes to soon see the original image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He was ordained a bishop in Chiclayo, Peru, on December 12, 2014.

Questions about when he might travel to Mexico are expected to be clarified gradually in the coming months, once his schedule for early 2027 is published.

The papal agenda is generally released monthly and describes both activities in the Vatican and pastoral visits to countries across the Catholic world. Several members of the Catholic Church in Mexico and its pastors have suggested that a papal visit to Mexico could take place in the second half of next year.
