Esthela Damián Peralta on Guerrero and southern Mexico’s role in U.S.-Mexico relations, Digi Mart USA News: Guerrero and southern Mexico play an increasingly important role in the national agenda regarding the bilateral relationship with the United States, said Esthela Damián Peralta, former legal counsel to the Federal Executive, while highlighting the strategic importance of the U.S. midterm elections held Tuesday, November 3.

The former federal official said the results of the U.S. legislative elections will have repercussions for regional stability, economic integration, supply chains and the well-being of millions of Mexicans who live and work on both sides of the border.

Damián Peralta backed the position of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on foreign policy and the defense of national sovereignty. She argued that relations between the two countries should rest on mutual respect, permanent dialogue and cooperation, regardless of political changes in Washington.

She recalled that the Mexican president has maintained that the bilateral relationship must be built on equal terms, without giving up national sovereignty and while seeking shared prosperity for both societies.

In that context, she said the new composition of the U.S. Congress could influence priority issues for Mexico, including the review and continuation of the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (USMCA), tariff policy and the protection of the human rights of migrants.

She also stressed that Guerrero and the rest of southern Mexico have particular importance in this relationship due to their agricultural and tourism activity, as well as the economic and family ties they maintain with the United States through migrant communities.

She said thousands of families in Guerrero depend on income from relatives working in U.S. territory, so she considered it essential to strengthen mechanisms protecting their labor rights and to guarantee decent conditions for those who contribute to the economies of both nations.

The former legal counsel also called for strategic coordination between Mexico and the United States, fair tariff negotiations, particularly in sectors such as steel and agriculture, and a stronger domestic market.

Finally, Damián Peralta reiterated her support for Claudia Sheinbaum’s foreign policy, stating that economic cooperation and human mobility should be addressed through dialogue and negotiation, always with the defense of national sovereignty as an non-negotiable principle.
