Mexico wins bronze in baseball 5 at Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, Digi Mart USA News (Senegal): Mazatlán athletes Jacob Rodríguez Barraza and Carlos Mercado Gutiérrez contributed to the bronze medal that Mexico won in baseball 5 at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, held in Senegal.
Rodríguez was also named the most valuable player of the men’s baseball 5 competition, according to information published by Línea Directa. The recognition followed his participation in the international tournament, where he represented Mexico alongside his teammates.
Mexico secured third place after defeating Kenya in the bronze medal match, which was decided in three sets. According to the Sinaloa State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports (ISDE), Mexico won the first set 13-4, while Kenya responded in the second with a 3-2 score.
In the third and deciding set, the Mexican team scored five runs in the first inning and held its lead with a defensive performance that allowed it to take the bronze medal. The result placed Mexico on the podium of an international youth competition.
Sinaloa’s participation was not limited to the two Mazatlán athletes. The team also included Culiacán natives Michelle Valenzuela and Abril Martínez, under the direction of coach Tania González Galindo, also from Sinaloa.
Rodríguez and Mercado had gone through a preparation process before being selected. Both were incorporated into the Mexican team after national training camps and preparation work.
In August, the ISDE reported that Sinaloa was contributing athletes to the process toward Dakar, and in September the selection of both Mazatlán athletes to represent the country was confirmed.
With this result, the two athletes add an international achievement to their careers and once again place Mazatlán on the sports stage, now as part of a Mexican team that won a medal at a youth Olympic competition.
