Pope Leo XIV interest in visiting Mexico, Digi Mart USA News: Mexico’s government has formally invited Pope Leo XIV to visit the country, and the pontiff has expressed interest in seeing the Basilica of Guadalupe, according to the publisher’s report. A Vatican official has also said the trip will take place.
The invitation dates to May 18, 2025, at the start of the pontificate, when President Claudia Sheinbaum sent a letter that was delivered personally by Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez. The report says the pope again spoke of his interest in traveling to Mexico and visiting the Basilica of Guadalupe on November 18, 2025, while speaking to reporters at Castel Gandolfo.
On December 12, 2025, Sheinbaum renewed the invitation during a phone conversation with the pontiff. On November 3, 2026, María Montserrat Alvarado, the new prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, told a press conference that the pope will visit the Guadalupan Sanctuary.
The report notes that papal trips are normally confirmed officially through a statement from the Holy See Press Office, published in its official bulletin. That statement usually specifies the countries and planned dates, and the Vatican then releases the full itinerary, including cities, ceremonies and scheduled meetings.
According to the report, a press conference statement by Alvarado does not replace this institutional procedure. As of now, the official confirmation from the Holy See, including the announcement of when the trip will take place, has not been made.
