Texas claim to nine Rio Grande islands, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico): Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the Texas government, led by Governor Greg Abbott, has an electoral intention behind its claim to nine islands in the Rio Grande. Speaking from the National Palace, she said the matter is being reviewed by the bilateral commission between the United States and Mexico, but has not been resolved so far.
“They are in elections and declaratively want to say these islands are already part of Texas, but no. It is part of the review being carried out by this commission,” she said.
The president added that the islands emerge from the movement of the water, so it must be “measured” on which side they lie.
Dawn Buckingham, commissioner of the Texas General Land Office, announced on October 26 that she found nine islands in the Rio Grande to be state property. The lands were named Nixon, La Bota, Tex Mex 2, McKendricks, Lost Boot, Clark, Zachary, Miller 1 and Miller 2.
Buckingham said ownership of the islands had been uncertain for years, which limited their oversight and protection. Texas security forces will now be able to access these small islands.
However, Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) stated that no state authority has the power to determine sovereignty over the islands. “The border between Mexico and the United States cannot be modified by decision of a state government.
Its limits are defined by criteria established in an international treaty,” the ministry said.
