South Africa four new R2 commemorative coins Milestones of Freedom, Digi Mart USA News: The South African Mint is introducing four new R2 coins so that South Africans can “carry a piece of history in their wallets,” according to the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).

The series, known as the Milestones of Freedom campaign, focuses on important milestones in South African history and democracy. The four coins were launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Union Buildings in June 2026.

The first coin, marking the 1976 uprising, was released in June. Two more coins, honoring Maxeke and the Women’s March against apartheid pass laws, followed in August.

The final coin, commemorating the constitutional anniversary, completes the series.

The two August Women’s Month releases are historic because they are the first African commemorative coins to feature women.

SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago said: “However beautiful the new R2 coins may be, the coins remain ordinary legal tender – not collectables – so their face value is unchanged, and they belong in circulation.”

The distinction matters. The South African Mint also produces limited-edition precious-metal pieces aimed at collectors, which are often worth a lot of money.

Commemorative circulation coins, by contrast, are made to be used in everyday transactions.

The Mint’s most recent release was the 2026 African Range, its first-ever high-relief proof coin series. Its designs were based on sculptures by South African artist Dylan Lewis and followed five stages of a cheetah hunt.

Formats included quarter-, one-, two- and five-ounce gold pieces, two- and five-ounce silver coins, and one-kilogram gold and silver versions, limited to 100 pieces.

The contrast between that collector series and the four new R2 coins shows the two sides of coin production: one rare, high-value objects intended for collectors, and the other an ordinary R2 coin designed to pass from hand to hand carrying a special message for anyone who takes the time to notice it.
