French Regulator Says Summer 2026 Wildfire Costs Do Not Threaten Insurance Sector

French insurance sector wildfire losses 2026: France's insurance supervisor, the ACPR, says costs from this summer's fires in Gironde, the Landes and the Var are not expected to weaken the French insurance sector, though insurers face rising reserves for fire and property claims.

French insurance sector wildfire losses 2026, Digi Mart USA News: France’s insurance sector would not be threatened despite an estimated bill of several hundred million euros for this summer’s wildfires, according to a note published Tuesday, November 3, 2026, by the Autorité de contrôle prudentiel et de résolution (ACPR).

The supervisor, which is attached to the Banque de France, estimated that the costs of this summer’s fires in France are “not of a nature to weaken the French insurance sector.” The fires in Gironde, the Landes and the Var caused about 22,500 claims for a total cost that could reach 563 million euros, the industry federation France Assureurs had indicated to AFP in mid-October.

The ACPR noted that this amount is “to be compared with a total gross claims burden of 136 billion euros in 2025 for non-life insurers,” or more than 240 times larger. The figures were cited in a note titled “The situation of insurers in the first half of 2026.”

However, the supervisory authority, also described as the watchdog for bankers and insurers, observed that “the weight of the fire and property damage line in total non-life provisions excluding health has recorded a significant increase over the last six years.”

Earlier, in mid-August, Ecological Transition Minister Monique Barbut had said that repeated heatwaves this summer could cost France “on the order of 10 to 15 billion euros in direct and indirect costs,” including destroyed inventories, property and other broader effects beyond lost growth.
