Winter Fuel Payments for state pensioners, Digi Mart USA News (United Kingdom): The Government will be handing out Winter Fuel Payments to pensioners during November. The cash, worth up to £300, is given to around nine million over-65s to help with heating costs during the colder months.
While the majority of older people are covered, not everyone gets the winter allowance. The payments are now means-tested and linked to income.
Pensioners won’t get the cash if their annual income is over £35,000. This applies to around four million retirees.
The income rule relates to individuals rather than households. However, they will initially be paid the money before it is taken back by HMRC.
This is done in instalments from pension payments over the following year. Payments are worth between £100 and £300.
Older people aged over 80 get the higher amount of £300.
Winter cash was axed for wealthier retirees as it was felt the money was being wasted on households who didn’t need it. A separate £100 payment has been announced by the Government to further help with energy bills.
Whether households get this depends on what council tax band their home is in. The money will be paid to people with properties in council tax bands A-D.
The Government said: “Most people get the Winter Fuel Payment automatically if they’re eligible. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive a letter in October or November saying how much you’ll get.
Most eligible people will be paid in November or December 2026. If your total income is over £35,000, HMRC will take your Winter Fuel Payment back.
Your partner’s income does not count towards your total.”
