Carlos Sainz Williams Mexico GP, USA News: Carlos Sainz crossed the finish line in 15th position at the Mexican Grand Prix. However, he was ultimately classified in 12th place thanks to post-race penalties. Although this position was close to the points-scoring places, it did not reflect the reality of a Williams team that suffered significantly over the weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, which pushed them to their limits.
The Spanish driver explained that his race had begun with good sensations, although he lost ground at the start. The planned one-stop strategy appeared to be working, but the second restart complicated his options. Following that restart, Sainz dropped more positions and began experiencing balance and overheating issues, factors that hampered his progression on a circuit where overtaking is particularly difficult.
«We were doing a good first part of the race, although I lost ground at the start and ended up doing one stop, which was my idea from the beginning and seemed to be working,» Carlos Sainz commented. «We were on the right track to get the most out of what I had. Then, in the second restart, I lost ground again at the start and had some more problems with the car’s balance, with overheating and, once you lose positions on track here, it is really difficult to overtake.»
