Social Security benefit, USA News: With the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment officially set, millions of Americans collecting checks are looking to translate the increase into real dollars. The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirmed a 3.6% COLA for 2027, which applies to benefits paid starting in January 2027 based on Consumer Price Index metrics.
Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will see the increase in their January 2027 payments, while about 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will see higher payments starting on December 31, 2026, due to calendar shifts.
The Math Behind an $1,800 Benefit
For an illustrative gross monthly benefit of $1,800, applying the 3.6% COLA yields a gross increase of $64.80, bringing the total to $1,864.80 a month. However, the SSA typically rounds monthly amounts down to the next lower whole dollar after deductions, meaning an unwithheld benefit would likely be paid as $1,864.
Deductions and Real Take-Home Pay
The gross calculation does not automatically equal what lands in a beneficiary’s bank account. Many recipients have Medicare Part B premiums deducted directly from their checks. While the standard 2026 Part B premium is $202.90 a month, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services typically releases the 2027 rates in the fall. Increases in premiums or income-related adjustments (IRMAA) can offset part or all of a COLA bump.
