DWP cash payments, USA News: The Department for Work and Pensions has issued an official update addressing whether cash will remain the default method for providing Personal Independence Payment support to claimants. The update follows inquiries raised in the House of Commons regarding the long-term structure of disability benefits.

Neil Duncan-Jordan, Labour MP for Poole, questioned the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in the Commons to ask whether cash would remain the default way PIP is provided to all claimants following the Timms Review, and whether any non-cash support would be accessed on a voluntary basis.

Sir Stephen Timms, Labour MP for East Ham and leader of the review, responded that the Timms Review steering group is currently considering its recommendations ahead of the final report’s publication in autumn. He noted that the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions will consider the findings before deciding any next steps.

The Timms Review and PIP Recommendations

The Timms Review is shaping the future of PIP, with a final report scheduled before the end of the year following early recommendations published at the end of the summer. In September, the review released draft suggestions focusing on making the application process simpler and improving the overall experience for claimants.

Key principles outlined by the review include maintaining cash as the foundation of PIP awards and ensuring the benefit remains non-means tested to assist individuals with the extra costs of disability. Furthermore, the review emphasized that the assessment process should remain as straightforward as possible, with the DWP committed to utilizing a “Tell Us Once” approach for gathering evidence.

While cash is recommended to remain the foundation, the DWP has noted that certain awards may incorporate non-cash support and services by evaluating individuals’ extra costs through specific cost categories.
