benefits bill, USA News (London): The welfare spending in the United Kingdom will come down under a Labour Government, the Chancellor has stated amid reports that welfare expenditure is projected to balloon in upcoming years. The Office for Budget Responsibility has indicated that welfare spending is expected to rise from £353bn this current year to £431bn by 2032 if cuts are not implemented.
Pressed on whether the welfare bill will decrease or simply see a slowdown in growth, Chancellor John Healey stated that the administration will bring the benefits bill down. Speaking to the BBC, he emphasized that the overall bill must decrease, adding that there is nothing progressive in a continuously expanding benefits bill, describing it as both an economic and a moral duty.
Welfare Reform and Employment Goals
Healey further noted that changes to the social security system will be executed in a manner that reflects government values, securing the support of businesses and trade unions to transition individuals into employment. He characterized the situation in which one million young people are not in employment, education, or training as a national scandal.
