Solmar Golf Links sustainability certification, Digi Mart USA News (Los Cabos, Mexico): In an environment where water use and landscape conservation present ongoing challenges, Solmar Golf Links has maintained a recognition that reflects more than the quality of its facilities: its approach to coexisting with nature.
The Los Cabos course has renewed its certification as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, awarded by Audubon International to clubs that meet environmental protection standards. The course, designed by Greg Norman, was the first in Los Cabos to receive this distinction in 2021.
Five years later, it retains its place among the just over 900 certified courses worldwide, a network that evaluates everything from water use to the protection of species and their habitats.
The renewal is not limited to a paper acknowledgment. Solmar maintains measures to reduce the impact of its operations, such as decreasing irrigated areas, conserving native vegetation, protecting water bodies and constantly monitoring their quality.
The club also works on caring for the wildlife that inhabits this desert and coastal zone.
“Renewing our designation as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary represents an important recognition of the commitment and work our team carries out every day to preserve the extraordinary natural environment that distinguishes Solmar Golf Links,” said Akira Tominaga, the complex’s golf director.
Tominaga explained that the challenge lies in finding a balance between the player experience and ecosystem care. “At Solmar, sustainability is not an isolated initiative; it is a principle that guides how we care for the course today, with future generations of golfers in mind,” he added.
Opened in 2020, the course extends within an 834-acre community facing the Pacific Ocean, 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas. Its design followed Norman’s principle of intervening as little as possible in the land.
The layout therefore respects the topography, dunes, natural watercourses and endemic vegetation, and uses grass varieties that require less water.
The Audubon International certification, from an organization dedicated to promoting responsible environmental practices, covers six categories, including habitat conservation, water management, chemical reduction and environmental education. Solmar’s renewal confirms that a golf course can maintain high-level conditions for players while contributing to the protection of the surrounding environment.
