CONCANACO SERVYTUR calls on Mexico to leverage new U.S. political landscape, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico): The president of CONCANACO SERVYTUR, Octavio de la Torre, warned that the results of the U.S. midterm elections held Tuesday, November 3, will change the political balance during the second half of President Donald Trump’s term, after the Democratic Party won control of both chambers of Congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
He stressed that this does not mean Mexico has resolved its trade problems with its main economic partner, particularly on tariffs and the upcoming review of the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“Mexico must arrive at and remain at every table with its own agenda, identify what the counterpart needs, and build agreements that generate verifiable benefits for our economy. A political opportunity becomes an economic opportunity when there is preparation to take advantage of it,” he said.
In a statement, the national leader of the service sector said it is a priority to expand dialogue with Democratic and Republican lawmakers, U.S. authorities, business chambers and regional representatives, in order to identify areas of agreement on trade, job creation and certainty for investment.
The Confederation argued that Mexico should place among its priorities greater participation of domestic suppliers in value chains, facilitation of trade and tourism, opportunities for professionals and cross-border services, and mechanisms that allow micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to join the regional market.
De la Torre also called for preventing the benefits of economic integration from concentrating exclusively in large transnational companies, and demanded greater participation for family businesses in defining the country’s trade priorities.
“Transnational companies with operations in Mexico are an important part of our economy, but their interests do not replace the needs of the country as a whole. Family businesses must also have a voice in defining priorities and access to the benefits of trade integration,” he said.
CONCANACO SERVYTUR expressed confidence in maintaining permanent coordination with the Government of Mexico and noted that, under the Law of Business Chambers and their Confederations, it is a mandatory consultation body for authorities since 1917. It highlighted its territorial presence and two million direct members, as well as technical information to monitor economic commitments.
“Our responsibility is to turn dialogue into agreements and agreements into opportunities for investment, employment and growth for Mexican families,” concluded Octavio de la Torre.
