French fuel price drop diesel strategic stock release, Digi Mart USA News (Belfort, France): Since Monday, November 2, 2026, diesel prices in France have fallen by 18 cents per liter following the government’s release of strategic stocks. Despite the cut, many drivers say they do not notice the difference at the pump.
At a service station in Belfort, one driver pointed to a price of 2.27 euros per liter with resignation. The government released 10 million barrels of oil to lower pump prices, bringing reductions of 12 to 18 cents per liter for diesel.
Many motorists consider the measure insufficient. “On a full tank, the drop amounts to nothing,” one driver said, recalling that yellow vest protesters took to roundabouts over fuel prices of 1.50 euros per liter.
Another young driver said she no longer pays attention to prices because she cannot do without her car.
Drivers are adjusting in different ways. One retiree said she prefers walking or taking the bus, while others limit their trips to what they can afford for a week.
Vincent Gaffard, regional director of TotalEnergies, said the pump shortages were caused by a rush to fill tanks. He said his teams were fully mobilized to restock stations, though some Total stations in Belfort have been dry for weeks.
Drought on the Rhine is also worsening shortages. A large share of fuel in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region is transported by river, so supply depends on navigability conditions.
Guillaume Rognon of Mobilians, a fuel distributor in Franche-Comté, said the government chose to target diesel rather than gasoline. He said diesel rose at least 40 cents while gasoline rose ten cents.
Geopolitical tensions, including the embargo on Russian diesel and conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, pushed oil prices up. The measure is intended to rebalance diesel prices.
The price reduction is expected to last three months. Rognon warned that if international tensions return, prices could rise again by 20 to 30 cents per liter very quickly.
