Sheinbaum reaction to Trump midterm election defeat, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declined on Wednesday to confirm whether the results of the U.S. midterm elections would bring a change in the relationship between the government of Donald Trump and Mexico.
During her morning press conference, the president said her administration would for now maintain negotiations with U.S. secretaries and with President Trump.
She said the relationship with the federal government would depend on the Trump government itself.
“It is very early to know if anything is going to change, given the results of yesterday’s election,” she said.
Sheinbaum also celebrated the victory of Xavier Becerra in California and Gina Hinojosa in Texas, both of whom have Mexican origins. She said the results, which dealt a strong defeat to Trump’s Republican Party, reflect the sentiment of the American people.
“I think it shows a sentiment of the American people. I would like to highlight the victory of two people of Mexican origin, who are the governor-elect of California and the governor-elect of Texas,” she said.
The president noted that both Democrats have parents born in Mexico, so they “have a clear bond with their state.”
“We are very pleased that Mexican Americans who are there have this participation and this recognition,” she added.
