Mexico City Police Warn of Fake Rental Listings and Deposit Scams

Mexico City rental scam warning: Mexico City Rental Scam Warning: The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana cautions that cybercriminals are posting fake house, apartment and room rental listings to collect advance deposits and personal documents. Authorities urge residents not to pay or share sensitive information before verifying the offer.

Mexico City rental scam warning, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) of Mexico City has warned of a real estate fraud method on the internet, in which cybercriminals publish fake listings for houses, apartments and rooms for rent to deceive people searching for housing and obtain advance deposits.

According to the Cyber Police Unit, the perpetrators use attractive photographs, detailed descriptions and affordable prices to capture the attention of potential victims. They then pressure them to make bank transfers without confirming that the property exists or is available.

The criminals may also pose as owners or real estate intermediaries, use false identities and rely on third-party information to appear legitimate. The risk is not limited to financial loss, because the alleged landlords also request official identification, personal documents and banking details that could later be used to commit other frauds or impersonate victims.

In addition to requesting advance deposits, the cybercriminals may ask for personal documentation on the pretext that they need to complete a rental file. The data they could obtain includes official identification, banking information and other personal documents.

The SSC warned that this information could be used to commit new crimes, mainly fraud and identity theft.

For this reason, the agency recommended not sharing sensitive documentation with people whose identity has not been fully confirmed. The Cyber Police noted that the ease of exchanging documents through messaging applications creates risk when the legitimacy of a property transaction has not been verified.

The Cyber Police also identified warning signs of possible fraud. The main one is a supposed landlord insisting on a deposit before allowing a visit to the property or presenting documents proving ownership.

Another warning sign is the use of claims about multiple interested parties, intended to pressure buyers or tenants into an immediate decision.

Offers with unclear information about the owner or intermediary, and requests for personal documents without verifying the recipient’s identity, should also raise concern. The SSC emphasized that affordable prices and attractive photographs can be used as deceptive tools to build trust among potential victims.

Given the growing risks associated with fake real estate listings, the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana issued recommendations to reduce the risk of financial losses and prevent citizens’ personal data from being used in other criminal activities. The agency urged anyone who detects fraudulent listings, fictitious property offers or possible scam attempts to contact the Cyber Police Unit.

The department reiterated that no deposit should be made without first verifying the legitimacy of the real estate offer, because fraudsters exploit people’s urgency to find housing in order to obtain money and confidential information. The Cyber Police called on residents to exercise caution when searching for houses, apartments and rooms for rent, and to report any suspicious activity to help prevent further real estate fraud in the capital.
