Tecnológico de Monterrey hosts Global Bioeconomy Alliance Annual Conference in Mexico for the first time, Digi Mart USA News (Monterrey, Mexico): The School of Engineering and Sciences (EIC) of Tecnológico de Monterrey hosted the Global Bioeconomy Alliance Annual Conference 2026 from October 26 to 30 on its Monterrey campus. The meeting brought together universities from Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa to address the development of biomaterials and sustainable food production.

The initiative aims to accelerate technological innovation and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9). The conference was the first edition held on Mexican territory.

The alliance includes institutions such as the Technical University of Munich, the University of Queensland, Universidade Estadual Paulista, NTU Singapore and North Carolina State University. Tecnológico de Monterrey is the only Mexican institution in the alliance.

Delegations from UNAM, IPN, UANL, the University of Guadalajara, CIAD and universities in Chile, Colombia, Peru and Costa Rica also attended to strengthen scientific research.

Feniosky Peña-Mora, dean of the School of Engineering and Sciences, said developing technology in Mexico that addresses major environmental and productive challenges requires stronger collaboration among universities, research centers, industry and the public sector. He said participation in international networks such as the Global Bioeconomy Alliance offers an opportunity to enrich research in Mexico and contribute to solutions with global reach.

Cristina Chuck, leader of the EIC Health Hub and scientific committee chair of the conference, said the bioeconomy transforms scientific knowledge and biological resources into sustainable solutions for food, health, energy, materials, industry and the environment.

Over five days, specialists discussed biomanufacturing, artificial intelligence applied to sustainability and regenerative agriculture. The program included presentations by David Zilberman, 2019 Wolf Prize in Agriculture laureate, and Guillermo Ruiz-Esparza, a scientist with the Harvard-MIT division.

The agenda linked laboratory advances with business models capable of advancing the circular economy.

The conference aligns with priority areas of the EIC in its Health, Climate and Industrial Transformation hubs. The Biotechnology Center serves as a link between academic rigor and the needs of the productive sector, a connection the institution says reinforces its institutional agenda under ESG criteria.
