Vatican denies Pope Leo XIV Plans Mexico Visit, Clarifies Guadalupe Confusion, Digi Mart USA News (Vatican City): Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni categorically denied rumors that Pope Leo XIV would make an imminent visit to Mexico. The clarification followed various press reports that assumed the pontiff would visit the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City during his next trip to the Americas.
According to the Holy See official, the confusion stemmed from a misinterpretation during a press conference presenting the agenda of the Pope’s upcoming South American tour. María Monserrat Alvarado, prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, said the Catholic leader would visit “the Virgin of Guadalupe,” which triggered the confusion.
Bruni clarified that the prefect was referring to the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, popularly known as the Casavalle temple, located in Montevideo, Uruguay. This Marian shrine will be one of the confirmed stops on the apostolic tour that Leo XIV will make from November 6 to 17, visiting Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
Although the Vatican made clear that there is currently no official date for the Pope to set foot on Mexican soil, it recalled that since the early months of his pontificate, Robert Francis Prevost has expressed a deep desire to visit the Tepeyac sanctuary in Mexico. The report also noted that the Pope maintains a close bond with the Virgin of Guadalupe, having been ordained a bishop on December 12 in Chiclayo, Peru.
