US midterm elections and Mexico policy outlook, Digi Mart USA News: This Tuesday the United States votes, and Mexico is holding its breath. Polls give Democrats more than a 90% chance of recovering the House of Representatives and about a 70% chance of winning the Senate.
But a defeat at the ballot box would not mean a truce for Mexico. A president constrained at home may seek outside the power denied to him inside, and Mexico offers the most valuable issues for Washington: drug trafficking, migration and trade.
These are not obsessions of Trump; they are a state agenda shared by Democrats and Republicans.
Any relief, if it comes, will come through tariffs. If tariffs punish Republicans at the polls, some will distance themselves from Trump, not out of solidarity with Mexico, but for electoral calculation.
And if the result goes against him, Trump could fall back on a familiar script: denounce fraud and disconnect his responsibility from the ballot box. A defeat reduces his room for maneuver, but not his belligerence.
The question is not whether Trump wins or loses, but what Mexico will do with the room that a Republican defeat opens.
