Pope Leo XIV Virgin of Guadalupe visit clarification, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico): Confusion arose this Tuesday over a possible visit by Pope Leo XIV to Mexico after María Montserrat Alvarado, the new prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, announced the Pontiff would visit the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Mexican journalist Valentina Alazraki, Rome and Holy See correspondent for N+, clarified on the platform X that Alvarado was referring to the Casavalle parish in Uruguay. She stated that when Alvarado discussed the Latin American trip at the press conference, the reference to the Virgin of Guadalupe pertained to that parish.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni reportedly said Alvarado did not refer to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City but to the Casavalle parish in Uruguay. Therefore, he said, there was no confirmation of a papal trip to Mexico.

Alazraki added that, according to several Vatican sources, Pope Leo does want to visit Mexico and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. However, she said, there is nothing concrete yet regarding a date or itinerary, only the intention.
