Pope Leo XIV possible visit to Mexico Vatican confusion, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): A possible visit by Pope Leo XIV to Mexico, including a stop at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, has created confusion within the Vatican, according to the Mexican outlet Parabolica.MX.

Mexican journalist Valentina Alazraki, a veteran Vatican correspondent for N+, clarified that María Montserrat Alvarado, the new prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication, did announce a papal visit to a Guadalupe sanctuary, but she was referring to the Casavalle parish in Uruguay.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni was quoted as saying that Alvarado was not referring to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City but to the Uruguayan parish, and therefore there has been no confirmation of any papal travel plan to Mexico.

Alazraki added that several Vatican sources have confirmed that the pope does want to visit Mexico and the Basilica of Guadalupe, but there is nothing concrete yet regarding a date or program, and only the pope’s intention exists.

María Montserrat Alvarado assumed leadership of the Dicastery for Communication on Sunday, November 1, 2026, becoming the first lay woman to head one of the most senior bodies within the Roman Curia, the administrative structure of the Catholic Church.
