Mexico US relations Saltillo mayor midterm elections, Digi Mart USA News (Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico): Ahead of the U.S. midterm election day taking place Tuesday, Saltillo Mayor Javier Díaz González said Mexico should seek to maintain a good relationship with its neighbor, as the United States is its main trade partner.
He stressed the importance of strengthening political, economic, commercial, academic and cultural ties regardless of the results.
The mayor said the relationship between the two countries has implications across many areas, and that conditions allowing cooperation and benefits for the Mexican population should be prioritized. He noted that U.S.
political decisions can affect Mexico’s economic and commercial dynamics.
“The most important thing about the U.S. elections is that Mexico is their number one trade partner, and the most important thing is that Mexico can have the best relationship in every sense: political, economic, commercial, and in academic and cultural matters,” he said.
Díaz González said it was still necessary to wait for the election results before anticipating possible scenarios, noting that a significant number of U.S. citizens had cast their votes early, so participation was not limited to election day.
The November 3 elections are the U.S. midterm cycle, renewing the entire House of Representatives, part of the Senate and 36 governorships.
Although no president is elected, the results will define the composition of Congress and the political checks on the administration of Donald Trump over the next two years.
The new legislative balance may also influence decisions on trade, migration and security policy, issues directly tied to Mexico. For this reason, the vote results are a point of attention for the Mexican government, particularly amid negotiations and differences between the two countries.
Economically, trade occupies a central place due to integrated production chains and the exchange of goods between the two territories. For industrial states such as Coahuila, trade conditions with the United States are especially relevant because of manufacturing, automotive and export activity in the region.
Another item on the bilateral agenda is the review of the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (T-MEC), as well as disputes over tariffs and conditions for trade. These issues draw the attention of productive sectors because of their possible effects on investment, production and employment.
In this context, the mayor said Mexico should maintain a favorable relationship with the United States across cooperation areas, without taking a position on the possible effects of the neighboring country’s new political makeup.
The municipal leader reiterated that the goal should be to preserve a relationship that creates better conditions for Mexicans, arguing that ties between the two nations go beyond the results of a single election.
