Pope Leo XIV Mexico visit denied by Vatican, Digi Mart USA News: Pope Leo XIV will not travel to Mexico on his next pastoral trip, the Holy See said, rejecting reports that suggested a visit to Mexican territory.
The confusion arose after remarks by Montse Alvarado, director of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication. She mentioned a papal visit to “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” which various media outlets interpreted as confirmation of a stop at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni clarified the actual scope of those remarks. The visit referred to the Parish of the Most Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, a church located in the Casavalle neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay.
The Pope’s official itinerary for this trip includes stops exclusively in Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. During his stay in Montevideo, the Pope will visit the Casavalle community as part of his pastoral activities with vulnerable sectors.
There is currently no date or confirmation for a visit to Mexico. Despite formal invitations from the Mexican episcopate and the federal government, the Vatican reiterated that no trip to the Basilica of Guadalupe is scheduled in the immediate official agenda.
The last time a pope set foot on Mexican soil was in February 2016, when Pope Francis made a six-day apostolic journey from February 12 to 17. During that visit he celebrated a Mass before thousands of faithful at the Basilica of Guadalupe and held large gatherings in the State of Mexico, Chiapas, Michoacán and Ciudad Juárez.
He also addressed key issues including migration, violence and indigenous communities.
