Nueva Escuela Mexicana, USA News (Mexico City): Respect and trust in the teaching profession serve as fundamental pillars of the Nueva Escuela Mexicana (NEM), functioning not only for educational professionals but also as primary builders of the educational system, stated Public Education Secretary Mario Delgado Carrillo.
The head of the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) emphasized that the redignification of teachers, promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, enables educators and the Government of Mexico to work jointly to guarantee the right to education for girls, boys, adolescents, and young people, thereby strengthening the National Educational System (SEN).
Recognizing the national teaching staff’s backing of the Mexican President’s educational policy over the past two years, Delgado Carrillo highlighted the vocation, commitment, and experience of teachers in forming critical citizens dedicated to their communities.
As an acknowledgment of their effort, the country’s educators have received gradual salary increases above inflation, according to the official release. Monthly income rose from 4,582 pesos in the year 2000 to 22,300 pesos in 2026, benefiting support personnel and educational assistance staff as well. The salary increased by 10 percent last year and 9 percent this year, representing an 80 percent real-terms recovery since 2018.
Persecution has been replaced by tenure and recognition, Delgado noted. In 2026, 200,000 tenure appointments have been finalized, bringing the total to 1.2 million since 2018. For the current school year, thanks to the executive decree on transparency in teacher mobility, 86,000 work center changes have been processed, allowing teachers to move closer to their families and communities. During the current administration, a total of 159,752 work center transfers have been carried out transparently based on seniority, prioritizing senior teachers.
Furthermore, the SEP head added that teaching performance is reflected in PISA test results, which demonstrate acknowledgment of teacher support. According to PISA findings, 81 percent of students recognize teacher interest in their learning, while 83 percent affirm receiving additional help when needed.
Finally, Delgado Carrillo underscored teacher participation in the consultation held on Friday, October 30, regarding the dissolution of the Unidad del Sistema para la Carrera de las Maestras y los Maestros (Usicamm). This exercise represents progress toward fulfilling commitment 27 of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s 100 commitments to abolish Usicamm and construct a new hiring and promotion system through dialogue.
