DWP Confirms £25 Cold Weather Payments From November 1 for Eligible Households

Cold Weather Payments: Millions of households across England and Wales could receive £25 for every qualifying period of freezing weather as the Department for Work and Pensions launches its annual winter support scheme running from November 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027.

Cold Weather Payments, USA News (London): Millions of households across England and Wales could receive additional financial support this winter as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) prepares to launch its Cold Weather Payment scheme for 2026-27. Eligible benefit recipients may receive £25 for each qualifying period of freezing weather, helping them manage higher heating costs during the colder months.

The annual scheme is scheduled to run from November 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. Payments are triggered when the average temperature in a qualifying postcode area is recorded or forecast to be 0°C or below for seven consecutive days.

Unlike some government support programmes, eligible households do not need to submit a separate application. The DWP generally issues payments automatically after the qualifying weather conditions have been confirmed.

The support is particularly relevant to pensioners, people with disabilities, families with young children and households receiving certain income-related benefits. However, receiving one of the qualifying benefits does not always guarantee eligibility. Some claimants must also meet additional conditions relating to their household circumstances, employment status or disability status.

Qualifying Benefits and Scheme Details

Cold Weather Payments are available to eligible people in England and Wales who receive certain qualifying benefits. The four benefit categories covered by the scheme are Pension Credit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit and Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI). However, eligibility requirements are not identical for every benefit.

Some recipients qualify automatically based on their benefit status, while others must meet additional conditions involving disability premiums, children, work-related activity groups or household circumstances. Cold Weather Payments are not available in Scotland, which operates a different winter heating support arrangement.

Benefit CategoryGeneral Eligibility Notes
Pension CreditDesigned for people who have reached State Pension age with a relatively low income.
Income-Related ESARecipients usually qualify if they belong to either the work-related activity group or the support group.
Universal CreditGenerally requires the claimant and partner not to be employed or gainfully self-employed, subject to specific exceptions like disabled child amounts.
Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI)Helps eligible homeowners with certain mortgage interest costs, subject to wider benefit conditions.

Weather Stations and Automatic Payments

Cold Weather Payments are linked to local postcode areas rather than being issued according to one nationwide temperature reading. The DWP uses information from the weather station closest to a claimant’s postcode to determine whether the qualifying temperature conditions have been met. Eligible households do not need to apply separately, and payments should normally arrive within 14 working days after the qualifying period into the same bank or building society account used for regular benefit payments.
