Hauts-de-France medical interns, USA News: Early in November, nearly 900 medical students will begin their internships in Hauts-de-France. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) welcomed this record figure, which represents an increase of 117 interns compared to the previous year and highlights another step forward in growing trained medical workforces. Concurrently, more than 200 new general practitioners will arrive in the territory, particularly targeting zones where healthcare access remains difficult.

More Interns and New Physicians in Hauts-de-France

For the November 2026 academic term, 874 medical interns will join care structures throughout Hauts-de-France, including hospitals, community clinics, health centers, and multidisciplinary medical houses. These prospective physicians will assist in patient care alongside existing professionals and welcoming teams. The ARS detailed that the impacts of healthcare studies reforms, notably the elimination of the numerus clausus, are progressively reflecting in training numbers. This growth serves as an immediate reinforcement for care facilities while establishing a more sustainable dynamic to eventually increase practicing physicians in the region, especially in general medicine and psychiatry where needs remain significant.

The November 2026 intake also implements the fourth year of general practice residency. Similar to other medical specialties, future general practitioners will complete a fourth internship year holding junior doctor status. A total of 214 junior doctors will begin their activities across the region starting in November 2026, working within medical offices, multidisciplinary health houses, and health centers. The agency noted that their presence will expand care capacities within these structures and offer additional appointments to patients.

Supervision and Priority Territories

Consultations are organized by the supervising physician, and the junior doctor operates under the supervision and responsibility of their internship preceptor. They cannot be designated as an attending physician by patients. Among these incoming doctors, 71% will practice in territories identified as priority areas for healthcare access, helping to reinforce local care provision where needs are most pronounced.
