Supplemental Security Income, USA News: Several million Americans received an early benefits payment as the Social Security Administration issued next month’s Supplemental Security Income two days ahead of its usual schedule. The benefit, which serves just over 7.3 million recipients across the United States, is typically paid out on the first of each month.

However, if that date falls on a federal holiday or a weekend day, the agency brings distribution forward to the nearest business day. Because November 1 is a Sunday and October 31 falls on the weekend, the agency distributed the November funds on October 30. Payments will return to the regular timeline in December, with program benefits scheduled for Tuesday, December 1. Consequently, while November benefits are still being paid, none are issued during the calendar month of November.

Some beneficiaries can also claim a monthly supplement from their state. Additionally, the Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% rise in benefits for 2027, starting with January’s program payment. This cost-of-living adjustment will push the maximum individual payment up to $1,029 per month, while the top couples’ benefit will rise to $1,544 per month.

Supplemental Security Income is a needs-based program aimed at low-income, low-resource individuals who are over 65 or have a disability. Unlike traditional Social Security schemes that pay benefits based on payroll-tax contributions, eligibility for this program is not contingent on an applicant’s work history.
