Social Security, USA News: The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirmed the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) on Oct. 14, establishing an increase of 3.6% that will take effect with payments for January 2027. According to the Social Security Act, the COLA is tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).
The SSA confirmed that certain beneficiaries will receive their payment reflecting the 3.6% increase on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026, ahead of the start of 2027. Official schedules from the agency outline that this advance occurs because Jan. 1, 2027, is a federal holiday and Jan. 3 falls on a Sunday. The administration notes that these deposits represent early disbursements of usual payment dates rather than extra payments.
Payment Schedules and Estimates
According to the SSA’s fact sheet and official calendar, estimated average monthly amounts and specific payment dates apply to the administration’s recurring disbursement framework as outlined in official agency disclosures.
