Trump Accounts, USA News: Elon Musk’s proposal to gift every American child a SpaceX share raises significant questions for families relying on Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid. Under Social Security rules, property generally counts when an individual owns it and holds the legal right, authority, or power to turn it into cash. A social media promise does not meet that test.
On October 19, 2026, Elon Musk stated he would give one SpaceX share to every child in America the following year as the first of multiple planned gifts. President Trump later indicated the giveaway would run through Trump Accounts. SpaceX went public in June and trades on the NASDAQ, closing at $143.89 per share as of October 29, 2026.
Understanding Resource Rules and Account Placement
Social Security caps countable resources at $2,000 for an individual in 2026, applying the individual limit to a child. The Social Security Administration also deems a portion of parental resources to a child under 18 living at home, after protecting $2,000 for one parent or $3,000 for two. If a parent holds the stock in a personal brokerage account, it can become a parental resource subject to deeming, potentially pushing families near the threshold over the limit.
Conversely, if the share is delivered through a Trump Account, the administration excludes the account’s value from SSI resources through December 31 of the year the child turns 17. Direct contributions generally do not count as SSI income during this growth period either, while distributions are typically prohibited.
Medicaid Connections and Turning 18
Medicaid eligibility is often tied to SSI receipt, though implementation varies by location. In 34 states and Washington, D.C., the Social Security Administration makes the Medicaid decision for SSI recipients. Eight 209(b) states, including Illinois, Minnesota, and Virginia, apply stricter rules, while three of those states treat non-blind children under 18 differently under separate standards.
Rules change during the calendar year the child turns 18. On January 1, the Trump Account becomes countable based on withdrawable value after early-withdrawal penalties. Kathleen Romig, a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, noted that exceeding the SSI asset test can suspend and eventually terminate benefits, which can also jeopardize Medicaid and home and community-based services.
