VA disability payment, USA News: Because the Department of Veterans Affairs pays disability compensations in arrears, the payments for November will come on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
Payments for a given month usually come on the first day of the next month. But if it falls to a weekend or a federal holiday, then it is moved back to the last business day before that. That is why the compensation for October was paid Friday, Oct. 30. That means no payment will be issued within the November calendar month, though no payment is skipped or missed.
VA records show that as of June 30, there are 6,573,827 veterans on monthly disability benefits. Of those, 2,090,059, or 31.8%, are rated 100% disabled and receive the highest amounts.
Current Compensation Rates and Ratings
A veteran with a 100% disability rating and no dependent will be paid $3,939 for the month, compared with $2,362 at 90%, $2,102 at 80%, $1,808 at 70%, $1,435 at 60% and $1,133 at 50%. Those amounts are higher for veterans with qualifying dependents.
Upcoming Adjustments and COLA
The expectation is that, starting with the December benefit, those amounts will increase by 3.6%, the cost-of-living adjustment announced by the Social Security Administration for 2027. That would mean an increase of $36 for every $1,000 currently received. The first higher VA disability payment is expected Dec. 31. However, the increase still awaits congressional approval and the president’s signature.
