Donald Trump, USA News (Washington): Even by the standards of the political landscape, the campaign ahead of the upcoming congressional midterm elections has featured intense rhetoric. During a campaign rally in Michigan, Donald Trump targeted Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed with severe remarks. Earlier in the month, Trump used an anti-transgender slur to attack Democratic South Carolina Senate nominee Dr. Annie Andrews, a paediatrician who has treated adults for gender identity issues in Charleston. Two weeks prior, immigration agents raided the Washington, D.C. home of Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar in connection with a criminal fraud investigation regarding immigration paperwork, prompting Omar to accuse the administration of targeting political opponents.

Trump’s personal attacks have extended across multiple state races. El-Sayed, a left-wing Democrat running to become the country’s first Muslim senator, has faced frequent criticism. In response to the rhetoric, El-Sayed emphasized cost-of-living issues. In the Texas Senate race, Trump criticized James Talarico, while Vice-President JD Vance made remarks regarding Talarico during a rally. In the Ohio gubernatorial race, Trump backed a controversial attack ad featuring the estranged mother of Democratic candidate Amy Acton, which detailed past allegations that Acton’s campaign stated were documented through grand jury indictments.

With midterm elections approaching, historical trends suggest the presidential party often loses ground. High stakes include potential Democratic control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, which would grant subpoena power and investigation capabilities. In Kansas, Trump criticized Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton and supported incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall. Meanwhile, senior Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, filed a federal lawsuit to prevent the administration from interfering with state election administration.
