Asylum seekers, USA News (London): The UK Government has announced plans to utilize £150 million of taxpayers’ money to fund additional large sites to accommodate asylum seekers. Following Chancellor John Healey’s Budget statement, details emerged showing that Labour is set to facilitate the administration’s commitment to ending the use of asylum hotels.
According to the Treasury red book, the government is providing a £150 million capital investment in 2027-2028 to fund additional large locations for housing asylum seekers. Officials stated this measure supports the broader objective of discontinuing asylum hotel usage.
Home Office Strategy and Savings
The Home Office stated that its ongoing plan to close asylum hotels and relocate individuals into alternative accommodation is saving taxpayers money. A government spokesperson previously commented on the strategy, noting that every asylum hotel is being closed, which has saved taxpayers over £1 billion on asylum support since the election.
The administration indicated it is working to house individuals across the country by moving them into alternative facilities, including former military sites designed to be self-contained in order to reduce the impact on local communities. Officials added that the process involves engagement with local authorities and police forces to maintain safety and security in surrounding areas.
The announcement of the new funding arrives amid nationwide backlash from several British communities that have voiced opposition to both current and future asylum sites.
