Iran, USA News: Four anonymous Iranian residents, risking their lives to speak out, have described the mental torture of being trapped under the ruling Islamic regime. Day-to-day life was oppressive before a war broke out in February, during which cities and military sites were hit by joint US and Israeli strikes ordered by Donald Trump to depose the rulers and destroy their nuclear threat.
Following weeks of attacks and thousands of deaths, an uneasy ceasefire began. However, as citizens wait to see if further military action will occur, conditions are deteriorating, and depression and hopelessness are spreading among the population.
Life on the Streets and Economic Despair
The identities of the four individuals, all opposed to the current government, have been withheld for safety. Their testimonies describe a country at breaking point, with a prevailing mood of anxious waiting. One shop owner stated that the waiting causes depression and that society is very sad. Another source noted that everyone feels hopeless and lacks any sense of security for the near future.
Economic hardships have intensified significantly. One source estimated inflation at over 300 percent, citing an example where the price of a Peugeot 207 rose 15 percent in a single day. The shopkeeper reported that for 60 to 70 percent of people, daily life centers entirely on securing food and essential necessities, while purchasing power plummets.
As society fractures and government oversight disappears, corruption, theft, and fraud are increasing. Some merchants and shopkeepers are reportedly making large profits from price hikes amid a lack of official oversight.
Fears of Imminent War and Divided Views on Britain
Sources warned that a major war could be imminent, held back only temporarily by upcoming political elections in America and Israel. Some predicted that renewed conflict could bring massacres and famine.
Opinions regarding Britain are visibly divided. Two sources expressed frustration, claiming Britain has never been a friend of the Iranian people and that European nations live in fear of the Islamic Republic due to assassinations and security threats. Conversely, two other sources expressed hope, praising British leadership for harsh positions and decisive action against terrorism and sabotage, while looking to foreign countries and future domestic protests as glimmers of hope.
